Campbell Gunn: Should have listened to AhDinnaeKen

AHDINNAEKEN’S NOT one for saying we* told you so to the SNP. But we* told you so SNP. Get yourselves embroiled with Wings Over Scotland, we said, and you’ll damage your cause. Yesterday, you got yourselves embroiled with Wings Over Scotland and you damaged your cause. You should have listened to AhDinnaeKen. As we* said earlier, we* told you so. AhDinnaeKen soporificates:

The face of the misogynistic Nationalist Front. Happy to call an ordinary mother a liar for expressing a view on the referendum. Check the Wehrmacht styled badge on the right of Mr Campbell's black-shirt.

The face of the misogynistic Nationalist Front. “Happy” to call an ordinary mother a “liar” for expressing a view on the referendum. In an irony free statement, he claimed that he had seen no one attacking Ms Lally.   Check the Wehrmacht styled badge on the right of Mr Campbell’s black-shirt.

By Longshanker aka @ergasiophobe

ON SUNDAY AhDinnaeKen posted a story entitled ‘Wings Over Scotland: The facts behind the Financial Times profile’.

We provided some free advice for the SNP. They didn’t listen.

And look what happened!

Campbell Gunn, one of the Firstminster’s £1 million inner Star Chamber, is fighting for his job.

Gunn appeared to make the mistake of believing that Wings Over Scotland is a credible news source.

In his official capacity as Firstminsterial special adviser, he attempted to undermine ordinary mother, Clare Lally, claiming she was the daughter of a former Labour Lord Provost.

Remarkably, and no doubt by complete coincidence, Wings Over Scotland had previously blogged this fraudulent, risibly inaccurate, information.

Coincidence or magic? You decide.

Wings Nationalist Front hate-preacher and entrenched misogynist, Stuart Campbell, finally conceded his error. But the damage was done – Gunn had embarrassed himself and the Firstminster, made his job unntenable, and proved AhDinnaeKen’s prediction that embracing Campbell would damage the SNP cause.

Campbell claimed it was all the fault of the “newspapers” who, according to his particular brand of pathology, had “published contradictory accounts”.

Mr Campbell is on record referring to himself as a “professional journalist”. He frequently cites that he has 20 years experience of the “profession”.

One of the first things any journalist wannabe learns is the checking of sources and facts. If you’re going to print, publish or post anything that relies on factual accuracy, it’s a fundamental journalistic imperative that you double check your sources. Basic stuff.

It’s clear from Mr Campbell’s defence of the “confusion” that his sources were the “newspapers”. He even cited the Clydebank Post, implying that they were to blame for his rank amateur error.

Mr Campbell’s subseqent appearances on television were also enlightening. We’ll leave it to others to decide what he looks like, but on BBC radio – where thankfully we didn’t have to look at his face – he called Ms Lally a “liar”.

He said: “I’m happy to call her a liar”.

No contrition, no regret, no empathy. The classic reaction of a narcissistic misogynist without a shred of human empathy. No wonder he lives with rats for companions.

On the same day that AhDinnaeKen posted our* piece on the FT profile, Ian Smart, the well known Labour lawyer and blogger, blogged on the history of the SNP and the type of people who constitute its membership.

It’s well worth reading. A couple of lines were most notable given the subequent events re Ms Lally, Campbell Gunn and Wings Over Scotland.

Mr Smart said: “...to drop the Donaldson lecture would infuriate a significant minority in nationalist ranks. Who would dissent, thus highlighting their views. And that would be disastrous for the SNP electorally.”

The SNP is home to some fringe loonies – loonies such as Wings who see political capital in attacking ordinary women struggling with extraordinary circumstances.

When loonies like Campbell get their views highlighted, achieving the kind of publicity he got yesterday, then the truth is out. The type is exposed for the nasty, unsympathetic extremists they truly are – all in the name of a flag and a concept. The outcome is damage to the party and the party’s cause.

Campbell claimed that the Daily Record had referred to Ms Lally as being part of “the political elite”.

This was a complete fabrication. The Record said the following, “Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont said Clare would be the first of several non-political appointments.”

The headline in the paper was “Mum joins political elite to fight for carer’s rights” – hardly part of the political elite.

So how Mr Campbell managed to twist this into Ms Lally being part of the political elite is mindboggling. No doubt to certain Nationalist types it makes perfect sense, but that’s why Campbell Gunn is fighting for his job and Stuart Campbell has been exposed, yet again, as a nasty wee man with a grudge against the world which the independence referendum is giving a tediously depressing outlet to.

Roll on Sep 18. The sooner we see the back of the likes of Campbell and his swivel eyed cohorts, the better.

Next!

Yes, bloody marvelous. Did Stewpot really appear on the gogglebox?

What really stunk about Gunn’s e-mail… why, oh why did he put it in writing???… to the Daily Telegraph… the Daily bloody Telegraph!!! What did he think their position was???… was placing Lally’s maternal status in inverted commas as if even this was in doubt.

When people ask about the problem SNP has in attracting women’s votes, it’s ‘cos of stuff like this and the ridiculing of JK’s womanhood. This also shows why ‘ordinary people’ [1] are reluctant to go into politics.

At least last time Stewpot commanded a fire-team from 1-Bn-KEYBOARDS and an MSP believed him, he was at least factually correct.

Roll on Sep 18. The sooner we see the back of the likes of Campbell and his swivel eyed cohorts, the better.

Except that, as an official YES campaigner, Stewpot is subject to Electoral Commission rules even now.

    ~alec

[1] Lally is everything she said she was. A domiciled Scot and mother of a severely disabled child just like many other ordinary carers, and her experience and insight has placed her on the advisory team of a major political Party.

  2. Major Disaster

    Another Day, another SNP disaster…

What the abuse of Scotlands ‘Mum of the year’ and J K Rowling will do for the SNP’s courting of the female vote is anyones guess, but ‘Women for Yes’ headed up by Elaine C ‘Marydoll’ Smith have been conspicuous by their silence, which has been deafening…

The other problem is what happens if Ms Lally decides to take legal action against Campbell Gunn and Wingsy?

Scotlands ‘Mum of the year’ vs Salmonds spin doctor and Wingsy, what a court case that will make!

    • Alec

Yes, they wanted the fight in public but now are trying to have it removed to private when it goes against them.

I predict generous donations to charities of Lally’s choosing.

What i find particularly depressing is the reaction from the cybernat community at large.

Not particularly abusive, but they just don’t get why the Gunn email was weird and sinister and why “going after” Lally’s political background is equally irrelevant and even more sinister.

What would the mum of the year know about whats best for the children of Scotland! Silence that Labour Stooge in case someone mistakes her personal opinion for, er, her personal opinion!

    • Alec

The FT piece reported his saying that he calls himself Reverend “to distinguish himself online from another Stuart Campbell, a murderer”. There are, what?, hundreds if not thousands of men called ‘Stuart Campbell’.

Quite apart from the matter of his having been calling himself RevStu long before Danielle Jones’ murder, what a tacky attention-seeking creep.

      ~alec

    • Anyone who saw Ms Lalley on TV would know that her reaction – she was bravely holding back tears – was natural.

To attack someone as a “liar” who has selflessly dedicated herself to her daughters is despicable.

      Regards

I see someone on the Scotsman comments is asking for ahdudnaekens name. I think it would be funny if we all proclaimed ‘I am longshanker” I am longshanker. They are even suggesting that most if the abusive comments are actually coming from better together supporters and not cybernats. Keep up the good work.

Can you please delete my surname. I don’t want cybernat attacks. Thsnks

What is it with his eyes? He looks like he’s been up freebasing speed for a week!

I noticed that whatsername ewing had the same crazed look in eyes on the telly last night. Is there some weird mind control thing going on a sep hq?

But on a (semi) serious point, ta for exposing the nasty underbelly of Wangs. What i find interesting is that now Wangs is a registered yes campaigner will they come under extra scrutiny? There is certainly of stuff that has gone on with that site that could cause the yesnp some real difficulties.

Also has anyone thought of going on a FOI fishing expedition relating to the Clare Lally scandal? If it was ever proven that Gunn had been in contact with Wangs it could get very embarrassing for Sliarmond.

    Keep sticking the boot it!

    • has anyone thought of going on a FOI fishing expedition

Gunn’s too seasoned a campaigner to have left anything of a trail on that one.

If he made a mistake, it was believing what he read in WOS.

And yet he e-mailed… I mean, not just e-mailed but did so from his work account!!!… the Daily Telegraph… the Daily bloody Telegraph!!! What did he think their position was???

No, you ascribe far too much sense to your opponents. They’re not Svengalis… they sometimes just are lucky not to have been caught. Yet.

Good idea. How do we go about phrasing such an FoI request?

        ~alec

      • Jings

I wouldn’t be so sure. If he is daft enough to email the DT (of all papers!) then i would be surprised if he is particularly IT savvy. It can be very difficult it can be to delete emails with multiple back up systems.

    Here’s one of the posts:

Do you know who the author of this blog is Whisky? He might be a rapist, a paedophile, a member of the BNP he might even be the Limbs in the Loch killer posting from prison.

You can hardly complain about Stuart Campbell if you are posting links to a blog that you know nothing about the author.

WHO IS THE AUTHOR OF AH DINNA KEN? WHO IS LONGSHANKER?

I think voters should know who the author of this blog is don’t you?

  8. No Thanks

Have you got a link to that 80yr old that was aaaualted in Edinburgh? I believe the lady who did it was immediately apologetic. The nats are using it again to highlight that abuse also comes from the unionist side Think that’s the only one they have.

    • Alec

Yes, I’ve been looking for an update on that as well. IIRC, the woman in question was not apologetic, didn’t even stop after, according to the Police report, saying nothing at all.

It looks like nothing but a slob barging into someone and not looking behind her.

There also was an SNP MSP who was having a “heated political discussion” in a pub, and ended-up with hands around his throat. Sounds like a common event in a Scottish pub. For all we know he could have been talking with a Death-Eater Nat who objected to his suggestion that they start accepting that people may disagree with them out of principle not mendacity.

Here Stewpot is declaring physics to be a Westminster conspiracy.

    • Yoshi

Yep, that’s a Campbell classic. Give one of the poor participants – johnpeat – of that ‘debate’ some decent credit for this:

“Stu, you’re the only man alive who continues to argue long after he’s been proven wrong – as if you somehow HAVE to do it – as if it’s required of you (or your persona?)

You’re right – I stopped reading your stuff a while ago, I was responding to the physics question only – I stopped reading your stuff when you changed from a passionate and sometimes funny games journo into the man who just attacks everything like his life depends on it.”

Nail completely hit on the head.

Stuart Campbell apparantly suing the Scotsman for libel after they printed ‘lies’ that Campbell believed Hillsborough to have been the fault of the fans in the stadium, for saying that he found 9/11 hilarious and claiming he advocated the photographing of Better Togetger Campaigners so they can be identified.

  12. Davie

    Hey, there.

I’m writing a post, and would love it if you could help me. Can you give me links to examples of Campbell’s misogyny?
I’ve had a look on google, but it’s a hard to find fact checked material, and I want to be accurate.

    Thanks!

    • Sorry Davie

But it depends on how you define misogyny.

Plus, I’m going to be doing something about that myself soon.

      Regards

    • Alec

Davie, here is a good start. Then there’s the general drip-drip theme of belittling opponents as crazy women.

Also, Longshanker, there’s a comment of mine awaiting approval… hop to it maggot.

Have Yes Scotland distanced themselves from WoS, has Wingsy been accepted by the Yes campaign as a ‘legitimate’ source of indyref information, or is Yes campaign stance regarding WoS ambiguous?

At a recent show, my mother and my girlfriend were approached by Yes campaigners and given leaflets listing pro-Yes sites of indyref information. Having read quite a lot regarding Wingsy, from various sources and here (thank you!), I was (not) surprised that top of that list (of 14 sites) was WoS, followed by Newsnet. Yes Scotland were 10th.

The leaflet admittedly may not be official Yes Scotland material, but this could be observed by the more cynical amongst the electorate as Yes Scotland endorsing WoS, albeit distantly through their local campaigners.

  14. Bruce Luce

Being a newcomer the the various blogs/websites peddling information on all things “IndyRef”, I simply must write to say, by far, AhDinnaeKen is the most humorous, well written, rational one of them all. Please keep it up!

I discovered ADK while having been reading WoS/Bath for some time (weeks, thankfully not longer) – I realised Stuart Campbell was using IP filtering to ban any comments “south of the border” (except for his, of course, since he is English and lives in England), and I decided to try to find out why. Anyway, I ended up here…

I know of Stuart Campbell from his computer jorno days…and his failed court bid with Future (wow, if I ever want to know “how to convince my psychiatrist that I am a deeply arrogant, narcissistic sociopath” – I know who to ask). Luckily for me, his “dear readers” (good grief, how patronising) seem barely able to read, or spell, so in all probability have no idea what I have just written – let alone understand its meaning.

Regarding the Ms. Lally / Campbell Gunn / WingsOverScotland public relation disaster – I am one of those that would actually like to see his “readership” increase – as it is inevitable he will slip up again. It is inevitable because, with a psyche such as his, It is clear he places far too great a premium on his own abilities (as evidenced by his Future publishing court case) and deep down, allegedly, values notoriety and audience, more than the political cause he serves. I suspect he is reeling from the Ms. Lally PR disaster – a definite “useful idiot”. But one I would love to see more widely read!

    • Alec

(except for his, of course, since he is English and lives in England)

Or Billy Bragg’s. That said, he is one of my tribe… accept my apologies.

PS Longshanker is the dog’s bollocks, eh?

      ~alec

      • Bruce Luce

Oh Mr Bragg…allow me to offer my sincere apologies. He …. he reminds me of “Rick” from the young ones…but with a guitar and a folk-song for almost any emancipation…including yours!

True, true. As much as it pains me, WingsoverBath it is indeed Scottish. 🙂
I meant to delete “is English and”.

Yes Longshanker is indeed super. I shall be visiting again soon.

    • Alec

Oh Mr Bragg…allow me to offer my sincere apologies. He …. he reminds me of “Rick” from the young ones…

I’d say Stewpot is much more like the fauxialist but deeply tosserish Tory, Rick… not least with his views on roundball extending beyond those on Hillsborough which even the current Conservative Party have repudiated. I dislike that game intensely preferring to see the ball smashed into its proper oval shape against someone else’s cauliflower ear and then teeth knocked scaterred over the pitch, but I am not an inhumane coward as Stewpot on Hillsborough.

D’you have concrete evidence for the IP blocking? I can quite believe that Stewpot would try it but, given that I use a Dongle which returns England-based IPs from here in Scotland, how long would he last? (That said, I have indeed seen Scotland-based commenters speak of IP-blocks.)

    • Alec

this going to affect Stewpot’s ego?

My guess, he’ll turn on Blair Jenkins as a crypto-Unionist a bit like Tsarist Russia on crack cocaine.

      It’s worthless.

      “Boo-hoo.

      • Bruce Luce

Yes. He is a narcissist. He craves attention. He needs an audience. Anything that detracts from that will make him seethe.

Where is longshanker? An interactive timeline, of WoB super-gaffes – ala google analytics – would be nice.

On Twitter he’s saying he’ll withdraw his comments his Johnson withdraws those about the Weirs. So, you didn’t really mean it, Stuart? It was just agitprop [1]?

Here is Stewpot’s response (he might have rigged it to links from ADK don’t work) with a pic called ‘HeraldScum’.

A number of papers today report a manufactured furore concerning some comments we made on Twitter a couple of days ago about Tory MSP Alex Johnstone while watching Scotland Tonight. The Herald, astonishingly, makes it the second-lead story on its website, with political editor Magnus Gardham gleefully seizing the opportunity to stick the boot in after being the subject of much criticism on this site.

        Oh, a boo-hoo-hoo! Cry me a river!

Getting monstered by Unionist newspapers isn’t exactly a new experience for us, after all.

Well, it is fairly easy to set up a automated blocking mechanism, as IP gives the geo-location – and most providers have local infrastructure which the IP will return. No hard evidence – as who knows what he does as admin – other than knowing a number of people, in England, who post posts, that never get posted….and the total lack of “another side” to the comments posts.

Either that, or all the posts are actually him – with his sycophant hat on.

As a writer, he is technically very good. His judgement stinks, as does his need for constant attention. His logic is “wanting”, but he knows how to weave fact with fiction to arrive at something plausible. Alas, his acolytes have neither the inclination, nor the ability, to hold him to account. Thus, he does well as a demagogue. His ego is your friend, as Ms. Lally showed.

I’m english and I dont hate Scots. I see the rubbish spouted by snp, and would like Scotland to “stay with us”. Not least, because its best for all parties. I work with….numbers…the type bounded around by SNP…and my analysis is based on that. There are simply so many, many huge holes in their arguments – I would be surprised if the polls showed 4% to Yes…let alone 40%..! I mean are people really willing to remove themselves from GBP and enter the currency wilderness…and that is just one (huge) issue of many….

    Nothing he writes surprises me.
